A female Treasury Secretary makes more sense for us lefties simply by the fact that the gender make-up of the financial industry would guarantee she wouldn't come out of the horrible class of people who caused our economic disaster in the first place.

Hey, the flip side of your logic here about Obama owing women is that if Romney had been elected, he would have been entitled to hire only binders full of white men, since he would have owed it to them. As a believer in trustee theory of representation, I somewhat take issue with this. I'm strongly of the opinion that the best representation and government comes from leaders who make the best choices, not the most politically advantageous choices.
Like I said, she should be chosen. I just dislike delegate representation in general. We need to make good choices, not necessarily choices that make us happy in the short-run.

John Kerry will find it hard to fill Hillary Clinton's shoes, but he might actually be the best candidate for the job of Secretary of State.

I know, but Senator Kerry has a much stronger resume. It's not good to favor one person over another because they seem like they are like you. You're a woman. He's been involved in defense matters for decades and sat as the head of the armed forces committee as long as I can remember. I know she is a really smart and competent person, but she can't hold a candle to Senator Kerry's record, not because she is a woman but because he is a really competent, really experienced manager of defense matters. Furthermore, just because he's a man doesn't mean he doesn't care about women or women's issues.

Ugh. I'm 100 percent onboard for diversity in hiring, yet that sentence has my stomach doing twists. Obama doesn't owe you shit, at least not in the sense you claim. Why don't you make the case that we need more Hillarys, Albrights, Liz Doles, or Katherine Sebelius', and no more Condi Rices, Elaine Chaos, or Donna Shalalas? How about making the case that if you're going to hire a woman, make sure it's a good one?

He's doing both. He is not indebted to use his staff hiring as a message to the gender as a whole. He's smart enough to choose either the most qualified person or the most politically expedient option. Or a mix of the two. If this woman is it, great!

There are a number of equally qualified people for the job, some men, some women. There is a historical lack of diversity in the cabinet. The President, seeking diversity of not only gender and ethnicity but of thought, chooses a female from the pool of equally qualified men and women. Was that so hard?

How do you know there are equally qualified women candidates. Do you know the statistics of women versus men that go into Political Science or an equally qualifying degree? Do you know if these women are capable of traveling and working the massive hours required? Do you know if any of these women would pass vetting? Instead of complaining about the problem, be the solution. Get yourself qualified and go for it or do you have obligations that would prohibit you from performing the job as many women do.
